Green Service Committee
This committee spearheaded the Athens Community Compost project and are
dedicated to making our congregation more environmentally friendly. They
handle the recycling and do work around the building and grounds.
Old Business
The UUFA Sign
After much research, we think we have found the right Signmaker - Jim
Everett. His work feels very artistic an we believe he will be able to
do a unique sign that will blend with our most unusual building.
The code enforcement regulations that we must abide by are pretty restrictive
because we are in a R1 zone.
They are:
- Must be freestanding
- Must be no larger than 15 sq, feet
- Must be 25 feet back from property line. ( We need to know where are
property lines are.
- Who has knowledge or record of that?)
- Cannot be more than 6 feet high
- Cannot be flashing
- Cannot be lit (We are hoping, in the future, to ask for a variance
here so that we can install a solar light on the sign.)
Meanwhile, until our permanent sign is being planned and built we are
having a temporary sign made since the one by the road is looking so shabby.
Monthly Greensheets Articles
Since we have all these bird feeders at the UUFA now, thanks to Mary and
Morrigan, we want to do a regular column about bird feeding. It will be
titled"At the Bird Feeder" and plan to offer educational information
about bird feeding, creating natural habitats for birds and bird watching.
We are planning to ask Bob Johnson if he will write the first one.
The second article we want to submit each month will
be about green living ideas and innovations. It will be titled "Green
Rhythms of Nature". Another of Mary's ideas which will offer information
and websites about simple, green living.
Complete Under the Deck Project
We would like to finish laying gravel under the deck to keep mud from
splashing around. After that we are going to plant (weather permitting)
3 holly bushes and 3 small leaf forsythias around the base of the deck
facing the grove path. The holly bushes will be evergreen plus have berries
for the birds.
New Business:
2007 Plans: Yard Sale, Earth Day Service and Booth, UUFA Booth design
and package...
Mary would like to present an Earth Day Service April 15, the Sunday before
National Earth Day then UUFA set up a booth at the Athens Earth Day Celebration
(which I believe is at OU?) celebration April 22. We would like to design
a booth package that anyone from our congregation could easily pick up
from the fellowship and set up at any event. We would like to especially
set up a booth for the Sustainability Festival in Sept. 2007.
Then sponsor a Yard Sale on April 29 as a fundraiser for the Green Service
and Grounds or for a specific project like restoring the deck.
Mary is student at Hocking College in Wildlife Management (I believe)
and is studying forest management. We plan in the future to do some brainstorming/
consensus gathering about the plans for our woods around the fellowship.
We could become UUFA and Arboretum!!!???
Meanwhile on Sunday we began cutting some invasive vines (Bittersweet)
off of some of the trees close to the building.
That's all for now,
